Masataka Matsumura knows a thing or two about combining chunky knits with heavy leather, a skill he demonstrated beautifully in this season's collection. Crimson reds and forest greens spiced up a pristine collection of predominately black and gray layered garb. A paneled floor length skirt was surely the show-stopping piece, but with Giuliano Fujiwara’s immaculate styling, it’s pretty difficult to pick a favorite look. Staying within the military-inspired trend, the Japanese designer was inspired by the samurai warriors who by nature appreciate how fragile all forms of life are but have to wage war because it's their duty. It’s this delicate balance between life and death that makes the samurai a poetic figure to the modern man. Focusing on fluid pants and heavy layering, MM put together an impressive array of layered styles that included a series of knits and an exceptional range of outerwear from cropped blazers to lengthened leather jackets, enlivened with oversized rosaries reminiscent of Buddhist prayer beads (a collaboration with Giovanni Bosso Atelier), and the occasional crimson and earth-tone colors that juxtaposed with a deep grunge black. The footwear department consisted of mainly high-cut silhouette sneakers with a futuristic look.
